On Sunday, February 13th from 11:30 to 2:00 pm, the American Legion Barr-Johnson Hill Post #111 will be hosting its annual Smorgasbord at Grays River Valley/Naselle High school. Tickets at the door are $10.00 for adults, $6.00 for kids 12-6 years old, and $2.00 for children six and under.
This yearly fundraiser benefits the American Legion's Ladies Axillary, led by Barbara Rose. The money raised will be used by the group to benefit the local community, to help local families, and for scholarships.
If you ask around about the smorgasbord you will hear nothing but anticipation for the feast to come. Says Bob Larson, longtime Post member, "You'll see people there who come from Astoria and Longview." Adds Cheryl Dutcher, a frequent smorgasbord attendee, "People come from as far away as Seattle." Bob explains the lunch's popularity this way, "when a visitor comes one time and sees the variety...well, they come right back [the next year]. It's great. It's been going on for about 40 years."
Hosting the event at the High School enables the Post to accommodate the many lunch-goers. Says Larson, "there's lots of good parking spots, and plenty of room for people to sit and eat."
The Ladies Axillary enjoys an unparalleled reputation for the food and hospitality. During the discussion last Sunday at the Grays River Methodist Church, all shared their enthusiasm for the coming event. Says Larson, "There is every kind of food, and it's basically second to none." Cheryl Dutcher agrees, explaining, "It's really something. Everyone goes. You'll see all your friends and neighbors." Noreen Fitts also plans to attend, "It's wonderful--you'll find all your favorite recipes. There is just so much food." Adds Marilyn Gudmundsen, "too much food!"
Hope to see you there!
